Siltanen, Kuudes Linja & Kaiku

This former industrial complex is nowadays host to the top three of Helsinki’s coolest and most fun nightclubs. Siltanen is a stylish but relaxed bar with a popular, beautiful terrace, live gigs, DJs and a crowded dancefloor. Also serves food. Siltanen: Hämeentie 13, www.siltanen.org. Hidden in the inner court yard behind Siltanen, you can find Kuudes Linja and Kaiku. The first hosts gigs and clubs ranging from alternative rock and pop to electro, hip hop, funk, soul… depending on the night. A laid-back restaurant and art gallery with an emphasis on Peruvian cuisine. It is also a popular place to chill out with a drink or two, especially on Fridays, when there are usually free performances by Finnish musicians.

Definitely one of the most charming cafés in Helsinki, IPI is famous for its welcoming atmosphere, delicious food and beautiful luminous interior, and has become a second living room for many local residents. Teurastamo

Before the area was turned into the centre of Helsinki’s new culinary culture in 2012, it had served as an abattoir since the 1930’s (hence the name, Teurastamo, Finnish for abattoir). In this area, you can find several great restaurants and bars, including B-Side bar (with 70’s-inspired music, decor and cocktails), B-smokery (a small BBQ restaurant), Ho’s Food (authentic Chinese street food), Jädelino (Italian artisan ice cream), Kellohalli (high-quality lunch restaurant, bar and events venue), Restaurant Palema (food made with high-quality ingredients, and a biergarten in the summer) and Teurastamon Portti (a small bistro for meat lovers as well as a butcher’s shop). You can also lie in the hammocks in the garden and use the outdoors barbecue area for free! All of this plus numerous events, parties and more, just a few blocks from the hostel!

Café Ihana

Located in the Kalasatama residential district, this laid-back but lively outdoor café set in old shipping containers right next to the Kalasatama graffiti wall with lovely views of the bay and its islands. Also hosts events and free yoga classes. Go before the construction of the residential area takes over this gem of a site!
